Just as it is in Hollywood where the spotlight shines brighter on some celebrities one year and shifts to other celebrities the next, the list of popular dog breeds changes yearly, too. Some dog breeds manage to stay in the limelight, some get pushed down by a little, and some new ones enter the scene. 2015 was no different. 15. Bull Terrier

2015 was a good year for Bull Terriers, and why not? Bullies are known to be bright, cheerful, and exceptionally loyal. As pets, they can be a constant source of amusement as this breed has a great sense of humor. They’ll make faces for the camera, play dress up, and spoil you with slobbery kisses. Be careful with bullies though because they can make a pretty huge mess when overly excited!

14. Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is actually one of the oldest breeds of dogs, tracing back to some 4,000 years ago; and in 2015, they were still a hot item! The breed originated in China and made its way to England in the late 1800’s. Although “Chow Chow” does have a Chinese ring to it, the word is actually a colloquial term for knick knacks sold by Asian merchants in England. In China, this breed is called Songshi Quan, which, when loosely translated, means “puffy lion dog”.

13. American Bulldog

The American Bulldog is as American as it can be, with its roots originating in Georgia, USA in the 1940’s. American Bulldogs are gifted with a stamina that can keep up with you as you engage in possibly any physical activity such as chasing Frisbees. This breed is known for its ferocity, which is why it is essential to train it to socialize with humans and other animals as early as a couple of weeks old.

12. Yorkshire Terrier

Did you know that originally, Yorkshire Terriers were bred for the purpose of hunting and eradicating rats in Scotland? Yup, hard to believe, because would you look at that cute, cute face? Yorkies have become so popular that there is an Instagram account wholly dedicated to this breed – @yorkiesofinstagrama with more than 10 thousand followers.

Cool trivia: The smallest dog in recorded history was a Yorkie named Sylvia who measured a mere 2.5 inches tall. You could have literally put it inside your pocket, but you wouldn’t of course, ’cause that would be cruel!

11. Australian Shepherd

Although named Australian Shepherd, this breed of dogs actually originated in the U.S. They were named such as they were originally bred to herd  sheep by Australian farmers in the country. They are an exciting breed to watch out for as its coat changes hues as it grows.

10. Beagle

9. Cane Corso

What a good thing to have a large population of Cane Corso again after almost going into extinction after World War II. Over the years, this breed has been used for guarding monasteries, farms, and important buildings. Cane Corsos make good bodyguards because they are highly intelligent and trainable – and extremely loyal, too. Did you know that just having its owner near makes a Cane Corso really happy? 8. Pomeranian

Pugs started to grow in popularity in the early 2000’s, and it has been a constant rise since then with more and more dog owners finding themselves yielding to this breed’s unmistakable charm. 5. French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is an excellent pet for families that don’t like noisy dogs as this breed rarely barks. Frenchies are not a highly demanding breed – they don’t require that much exercise to be healthy, are comfortable in small spaces, and are actually good babysitters. They’re not any good in the water or in the air, however because number one, their big head will make them sink; and number two, their small snouts will give them breathing problems in high altitude.
